Shetland Sheepdog Grooming Singapore
The Rare Beauty
Back in the 1700s, Shetland Sheepdogs were bred by farmers to herd and protect their flocks of livestock, primarily sheep. In the years that followed, there was so much crossbreeding such that by the end of the 19th century, the breed had almost lost its purebred appearance.
Breeders had a hard time locating existing Shetland Sheepdogs that looked the closest to the original dog, in an attempt to regain the original look of this gentle working breed. These days, the Shetland Sheepdog continues to gain admiration worldwide due to its sweet nature, exquisite appearance and good temperament.
Singaporeans Adore Shelties
Shetland Sheepdogs are affectionately referred to as Shelties. The Sheltie’s coat can come in brown, black, sable, tricolour, or blue merle with varying amounts of tan and white markings. It also has a lion-like mane and frill (the hair around the neck and on the fore chest).
They make cheerful, intelligent pets, thriving on human affection. They are good with children and bond intimately with the whole family, making them a charming companion among fellow Singaporeans. Plus, Shelties are allowed as pets in our HDB flats (Yay!) and smaller apartments.
The Heavy Shedder
The Shetland Sheepdog is a high maintenance dog with a double coat. The Sheltie’s coat is naturally water resistant. The long outer coat is straight and harsh while the thick undercoat is soft to the touch. They are heavy seasonal shedders, needing frequent brushing, detangling and regular grooming to maintain their gorgeous furry coat.
Furthermore, Sheltie owners have to be very patient and inventive when dealing with a great amount of hair shed in their homes. Generally, Shelties are very clean dogs who look after themselves adequately. But occasionally, they still need a helping hand from a human groomer.
Shelties’ Grooming Needs
It is important to give a Sheltie a good brushing – all the way down to the skin. While doing so, a groomer has to diligently remove loose hair, undo tangles and prevent mats from forming. Since working with a dry coat will damage the hair, mist the hair with a spray bottle before brushing.
Trimming the hair at certain critical areas such as around the paws, ankles, genitals, and behind the ears is necessary to keep the pet comfortable. Both of the Sheltie’s ears should be gently cleaned and checked for signs of infection, irritation, or wax buildup. Just like a human, their teeth must be brushed using canine toothpaste to fight gum diseases and to prevent tartar build-up. Also, nails should be trimmed at regular intervals.
